A massive bluefin tuna created waves at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, securing a historic bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2 million; £2.4m) during the market's opening auction of the new year.

The winning bid for the 243-kilogram fish was placed by the parent firm of a popular sushi restaurant group, which manages outlets throughout Japan and overseas.

"An inaugural tuna heralds a prosperous start," commented the business owner, a notable participant at the annual new year's auction.

Dubbed the Tuna Tycoon, this entrepreneur is noted for making high bids for bluefin tuna at these high-profile year-opening auctions.

Bidding Shock and Record-Setting Precedent

After the auction, the winner admitted to reporters that he was "taken aback at the final price," adding, "I believed we would be able to acquire it a little cheaper, but the price soared before you knew it."

This latest acquisition surpasses his previous record purchases:

  • He secured a tuna for 56.5 million yen back in 2012.
  • He bid 155 million yen a year later.
  • In 2019, he won a tuna for 333.6 million yen (2.1 million dollars).

Despite previously saying that he thought he "bid too high," he has now proceeded to break his personal record once again.

An Annual Spectacle of High Prices

The inaugural auction at the Tokyo fish market is notoriously associated with exceptionally high prices. The previous year, the initial tuna was purchased for 207 million yen by a different food company, which announced the fish would be available at its locations throughout the country.

The high-energy atmosphere at the fish market during these pre-sunrise auctions has transformed into a must-see spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which began around 05:00 local time, was no different.

Swift Service

The record-priced tuna was shortly thereafter processed for patrons at the bidder's sushi restaurants soon after the auction concluded.

"I believe like I've started the year in a positive way after tasting something so auspicious as the year gets underway," said one satisfied patron.
