Harvard ex-president Summers Resigns from OpenAI Board

Board Resignation
Summers announced he would withdraw from public duties after Congressional panel released his frequent communications with Jeffrey Epstein

One-time economic leader Larry Summers is leaving the board at the artificial intelligence firm, just several days after a series of electronic messages between him and late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein became public.

He commented in an announcement that he was "grateful for the privilege to have participated, enthusiastic about the potential of the enterprise, and eagerly await observing their development".

The former Harvard president, who formerly headed the Ivy League institution, announced on Monday that he would be scaling back from public roles due to his relationship with Epstein.

Digital Correspondence

The recently released messages showed that the official corresponded with Epstein until the day before Epstein's 2019 detention for suspected trafficking of young people.

In additional comments, the technology organization said it understood Summers' choice to depart.

"We value his many contributions and the perspective he brought to the directors," OpenAI commented.

Political Context

This development follows after the two houses of the legislative branch decided on this week to endorse a legislation that would compel the US justice department to make public its records on Epstein.

The measure will then move to the office of US President Donald Trump for signature. The President has stated he plans to approve the measure, after modifying his stance on the issue following pressure from his followers.

Correspondence Findings

A collection of Epstein-related emails disclosed by the House Oversight Committee recently referenced several well-known personalities in the Epstein's past associates, without implying any legal wrongdoing by those people.

The messages showed that the professor and Epstein often met for meals, with the billionaire often seeking to link the official to influential world leaders.

Personal Response

After the messages were made available with the wider community, he stated he accepted "complete accountability for my ill-advised choice to maintain corresponding with the financier".

He further stated that he desired "to restore faith and fix bonds with the persons closest to me".

Previous Positions

The professor served in high-level positions under Democratic administrations; functioning as treasury secretary under President Clinton, and as director of the National Economic Council under President Obama.

He led the university from five years and remains a faculty member there. When announcing his step-down from public duties earlier on Monday, he stated he would continue his teaching commitments.

Further Repercussions

Following his declaration on Monday, the Center for American Progress, a left-leaning policy institute in the capital where he was a prominent member, confirmed that the economist was ceased to be affiliated with the institution.

He became part of the board of OpenAI, which creates the language model, in the previous year - following a unsuccessful effort to oust its chief executive OpenAI's head.
