The English golfer Secures the Abu Dhabi Title in Dramatic Playoff Showdown Versus Tommy Fleetwood

Aaron Rai displayed remarkable nerve to secure the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on the final day, beating Tommy Fleetwood in a tense play-off following a topsy-turvy final round of play.

Rai nailed a decisive birdie from just over eight feet to seal the win, echoing his sole prior tournament success at the 2020 Scottish Open, which was likewise a play-off win against the same opponent.

Sunday's Play Drama

Rai entered the final round with a one-shot lead over fellow Englishman Tommy Fleetwood and Denmark’s Højgaard. He finished with a total score of 263 after a up-and-down, 67 closing round that featured seven birdie putts and a pair of bogeys.

The challenger moved one shot clear with two holes remaining after a birdie on the 16th, but his rival tied it up again on the 17th and then missed a 10-foot birdie attempt to win outright on the final hole.

Play-Off Decider

This led to a playoff at the Yas Links course where the eventual winner triumphed to take the championship and $1.5m (ÂŁ1.13 million) in winnings.

Other Performances

Rory McIlroy left himself a bit too far to do, finishing a stroke short in a tie for third with the Dane, after a stunning 10-under final round of 62. It was his lowest-ever score on the European Tour, comprising eight birdie putts and an eagle.

The Danish golfer carded six birdies of his as well, but his hopes of leading the leaderboard were hit by a bogey on the twelfth. English golfer Mansell hit an excellent final-round 63 to finish tied for fifth with Australia’s Hillier.
